What is an ATS and do you need one?
With an ATS, you don't run outside in the dark to start the gen and flip the changeover. It switches over for you.
What it does
An ATS (automatic transfer switch) watches the grid supply. When NEPA takes light, it starts your generator (if the generator supports auto-start) and switches your house or office to generator power. When grid power comes back, it switches back and stops the generator.
What you need
- A generator with electric (key) start — and for full auto-start, a model that supports an auto-start controller.
- An ATS panel sized for your generator and your building.
- Proper installation by a qualified engineer, with correct cable sizes and earthing.
When it makes sense
- Offices, clinics, pharmacies and shops that cannot stop when light goes.
- Homes with a key-start or standby generator, where you want no manual switching.
- Most useful for diesel and standby generators and sets from about 10 kVA.
ATS vs manual changeover
A manual changeover switch is cheaper, but someone must start the generator and move the switch each time. An ATS does it for you and avoids mistakes like connecting grid and generator together.
