How to take care of your generator
Most generator problems come from old oil, bad fuel or overloading. A few simple habits keep your gen starting every time NEPA takes light.
Oil
- Check the oil level before every start. Never run the generator with low oil.
- New generators: do the first oil change early — usually after the first 20 or so running hours.
- After that, change the oil every 50–100 running hours, or as your manual says. Use the oil type in the manual.
Fuel
- Use clean fuel from a trusted filling station. Dirty or mixed fuel damages the carburettor and injectors.
- Never refuel while the generator is running or hot.
- If the gen will stand for weeks, follow the manual: many recommend draining the carburettor.
Air filter and spark plug
- Clean the air filter regularly — more often in dusty areas and during harmattan.
- Check and replace the spark plug (petrol) as the manual says.
Load
- Do not run the generator at full load all the time. Keep about 20–25% spare.
- Start the generator first, then switch on appliances one by one — big motors (AC, pump) first.
Safety
- Always run the generator outdoors, far from doors and windows. Exhaust gas (carbon monoxide) can kill.
- Never run it inside a room, a closed garage or on a closed balcony.
- Keep it dry and on a level, firm base.
