Inverter generator or conventional generator?
“Inverter generator” is not the same as a home inverter with batteries. It is a petrol generator with smarter electronics.
What is an inverter generator?
An inverter generator makes power, then cleans it up electronically. The result is a very stable voltage — good for laptops, TVs, routers and phone chargers. The engine can also slow down when you use little power, which saves fuel and reduces noise.
Good points
- Quieter than an open-frame generator of the same size.
- Stable, clean power for electronics.
- Light and easy to carry; often uses less fuel at low load.
Limits
- Usually small — most are around 1–3 kVA.
- Costs more per kVA than a conventional generator.
- Not the right tool for big motors like ACs or pumping machines, unless the model is rated for them.
Conventional (open-frame) generator
The classic gen most Nigerians know: a steel frame, a petrol engine and an alternator. Cheaper per kVA, sold in bigger sizes, easy to service. Choose one with an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) to protect your appliances.
Which one?
- Inverter generator: a flat, a small office or a shop with mainly electronics, where noise matters.
- Conventional generator: when you need more power, want to run a fridge, freezer, AC or pump, or want the lowest price per kVA.
